How Does Thermal Paper Work?

Thermal paper printing is very convenient because it does not require ink. So how does it accomplish printing without ink? How does thermal paper work? You can know the reason by studying this article.

Thermal Paper Structure

Thermal paper structure

TOP COATING:

  • Top coating provides protection against chemicals such as grease, plasticizers and cosmetics.
  • Top coating protects the print head
  • Top coating improves printability

THERMAL COATING:

  • Thermal coating is colored by heat to form images and text.
  • Thermal coating provides heat resistance

UNDER COATING:

  • Hollow structural material in the under coating improves print sensitivity and clarity.
  • The under coating can modify the unevenness of the surface of the base paper.
  • The under coating improves printing accuracy.

BASE PAPER:

  • Base paper determines the thickness and strength of the product
  • You can choose between a base paper or a synthetic base paper

How Does Thermal Paper Work?

The thermal coating in the thermal paper changes color when it is heated. When a thermal printer works, the temperature of the print needle rises, the thermal paper in contact with it starts to change color, and finally you can print out the text or picture.
There are two main types of thermal components in the thermal coating: a colorless dye or white dye; and a color developer.
Commonly used colorless dyes are: crystal violet lactone (CVL) of triphenylmethyl phthalide system, fluoran system, colorless benzoylmethylene blue (BLMB) or spiropyran system.
Commonly used color developers are: para-hydroxybenzoic acid and its esters (PHBB, PHB), salicylic acid, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid or aromatic sulfones.
When thermal paper is heated, a chemical reaction occurs between the colorless dye and the developer to produce color. The hollow particles in the under coating provide an insulating layer for the thermal coating in the thermal paper. This prevents excessive heat loss from the print head. When thermal paper is used to receive signals from a fax machine or to print directly from a thermal printer, graphics and text are displayed. Since there are many types of colorless dyes, the writing colors vary, including blue, purple, and black.
