Thermal paper purchasing instructions

Thermal paper is also known as thermal pos paper, pos paper roll, thermal till roll, cash register paper, thermal receipt paper, cashier roll.Thermal paper is made by applying a layer of thermal coating to a high-quality base paper, which is also called a thermal color change layer.

Thermal paper is usually sold in rolls, generally 80mm x 80mm, 57mm x 40mm is the most common, the number in front indicates the width of the paper roll, and the one behind is the diameter. Of course, as a factory we can customize any size of thermal paper to meet the needs of our customers.

Thermal paper is widely used in.

  • As a communication carrier for text and graphics in fax machines, such as fax paper.
  • As recording materials in medical, banking and measurement systems, such as ECG paper, thermal instrument recording paper, etc.
  • used as printing paper for Internet terminals.
  • In commercial activities, used to make trademarks, sign codes (POS), etc.

You need to know before purchasing:

  • The quality of thermal paper is determined by which factors
  • How to test the thermal paper you buy

The elements of a roll of paper are Diameter, width, length, square grams (gsm), thickness, weight:

  • The width and length of the diameter can be measured by the scale, while the length of a roll of paper is closely related to the GSM of the base paper, thickness, and core size。
  • Generally the smaller the GSM is, the thinner the base paper is, the longer the meter length in the same diameter is, the larger the weight of a single roll is.So the price is more expensive, but also relatively more cost-effective.

Tube core:

  • There are many kinds of tube cores, the material is roughly divided into cardboard cores and plastic cores, plastic cores is most commonly used in black plastic cores.
  • The default size is 15mm * 17mm, in addition to 16mm * 20mm, 25mm * 29mm, 40mm * 44mm, 76mm * 80mm, etc.
  • The role of the core is to enable the printer shaft to support the paper roll, so the inner diameter of the paper roll core must be bigger than the outer diameter of the printer support shaft.
  • Of course, there are many printers without support shaft, therefore,it is irrelevant to the size of the core, and have one kind of roll that has no core.

Packaging:

  • Default packaging is transparent plastic heat shrink, generally 80mm specifications for 5 rolls and 57mm specifications for 10 rolls (5 rolls of 2 rows of vertical)
  • We also have black plastic shrink packaging, black cookie bags, gold/silver foil packaging, gold/silver cigarette paper packaging, white paper packaging, custom logo paper packaging, neutral packaging, etc.
  • The default outer box is a blank yellow box with box mark stickers, if the number of boxes reaches a certain amount,we can print the box mark for free. In addition, we can custom white boxes or color boxes and so on.

Custom Printed Thermal Paper:

  • Thermal paper has taken over every aspect of our lives, and as we see in life, it is not all blank. Many businesses will print their logo on thermal paper, which not only adds to the beauty of the paper, but also serves as a promotional tool. As a factory,we accept custom printing services.

Thermal orientation:

  • The coated surface and the smoother side is the thermal side, the rougher side has no thermal effect. So the thermal surface orientation is closely related to the direction of the printer's print head outlet, generally the thermal surface facing outward, but the thermal paper is affected by temperature and friction, in order to protect the paper, the thermal surface also be put inward, this model generally for the custom ones with printing more.
  • In addition, thermal paper of heavier GSM, sometimes with tear lines and holes, if small holes in the wrong direction,it will fail to print.

Thermal paper classification:

  • Three proof: waterproof, oil-proof, scratch-proof, and some can be protected against a certain degree of alcohol.
  • One-proof: Waterproof
  • No proof
  • Lightly run the fingernail across the surface of the thermal surface and a black line will appear.
  • Sometimes a new roll looks blackened mottled, it is not dirty but friction to make the paper color, but three proof scratch ones need to scratch very hard to show color, so you can retain a cleaner surface.
  • Some countries have a higher degree of environmental protection, they need materials without bisphenol, which is a color developer with certain hazards to human body .
  • The most common in thermal paper is bisphenol A (BPA) ,bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS), etc.,

Preservation time:

  • Thermal paper is a relatively unstable material, and its preservation time is greatly related to the preservation environment, as seen in Figure 1.1 below. Temperature, humidity, and light intensity are important factors affecting its stability, i.e., preservation performance, and can be preserved longer in a light-proof and cool environment. See Figure 1.2 below. When it is placed in an environment below 80℃, it is in a stable state, and above 80℃, the activity rises linearly and the thermal coating starts to change color, and even the whole sheet will be blackened. Usually thermal paper can be kept in a cool environment for 1-2 years, and if there is a special need, there are materials with a long shelf life, up to 15-20 years.
